![]() Because SUPER WHY is interactive, it's fun to watch with your child and it's easy to get involved in his learning. The games and story lines showcase skills needed for your child to learn to read. And talking about what you're seeing together helps develop critical thinking skills, memory, and imagination. Always ask: who, what, where, when, and WHY? WHO: Who does she see on the screen? Can she name the characters? Can she name the Super Readers? When the show is over, talk about what the characters did. Do any of the characters remind her of people she knows? Suggested Activity: Have your child make a Super You poster. Encourage her to include her favorite friends, books, games, people, and places. WHAT: What does he they think will happen next? Make a connection between what happened in the fairy tale and what problem the Super Readers were trying to solve. Can he think of a similar situation that he's been in? Can you describe one yourself? Connecting the show to your child's life makes learning more real and meaningful. Suggested Activity: Help your child keep a journal. He can use pictures and words, or you can help him write about his feelings, what problems he has, and how he solved them. Encourage daily submissions. Take time each week to read and reflect. WHERE: Where does she think Storybrook Village could be? It's fun to imagine it as a real place. When the Super Readers "fly" into the 2-dimensional pages of the books their "world" suddenly becomes 3-dimensional! Talk about the sights in the town. What are they "made of?" They'll see cut paper, buttons, and lots of familiar objects as the Super Readers cruise around. Can you point them out to each other? You can also discuss "where" they find the books that Princess Pea makes appear. Have you been to the library lately? Suggested Activity: Make a Why Flyer out of paper. Fold it like an airplane and have your child decorate it with crayons or markers. WHEN: When the children have a problem, Super Readers use problem-solving skills to help solve it. When your child has a problem, ask him how he solves it. Can he think of another way the SUPER WHY story could end? SUPER WHY s the idea of using books to relate to real life situations. When the Super Readers get excited about reading and writing, their behavior encourages a love of books in children who see it modeled. Suggested Activity: Write a Three Little Pigs story with your child's own ending! WHY: Why did the characters act the way they did? How did the Super Readers help the characters change their behavior? Why was this a good idea? Can your child think of any other way to solve the problem? Can he think of another book the Super Readers could have used? Suggested Activity: Make a SUPER WHY word wall! Write new words that your child learned from the show onto index cards and put them onto the word wall! |
